ABOUT THE ROOM AND PHOTOS

The sunroom is a work in progress, for many reasons. I want it to be light and bright and colorful, which it is definitely not right now.  But it has access to the backyard with lots of windows and light and a great view of the circular brick patio and the backyard. It is located off the dining room and kitchen to the right and the den to the left, and is also the adjacent to the master bedroom and a powder room. We gather there comfortably as a family and watch television in there. So it functions as my den, as I have big plans for the large den in this home to become something else entirely, as I do not think the house needs three large living areas and will function very nicely with two, plus the basement.

There have been some problems with this room since we moved in, to do with the flat roof above it. It was converted at some point into the sunroom, but used to be the back porch originally (they cut out most of the exterior brick on one wall and the original exterior brick that is left near the kitchen has been painted over). When it was a back porch, there was an interior hallway that led to the den. The french doors leading from the dining room to the sunroom looked much homier once we removed the weather stripping. There is also still a functioning outdoor water faucet in the room that I have capped off for now, but plan to eliminate entirely when the kitchen is renovated in the future. The flat roof is the only part of the roof that is flat and it has a leak issue that must be resolved, with all the ramifications that entails for moisture, if I can get a roofer out here. They apparently are quite busy.

The room used to painted pale pastel blue when we moved in, and we repainted it SW 6385 Dover White by Sherwin-Williams, but I do plan to repaint in the future, because I am not sold on the Dover White for this room. At first we had some borrowed furniture in the sunroom and after that, we have always had leftover furniture in there, because we were more focused on other rooms in the house when we moved in.

Right now it has an old Rowe sectional we found on Craiglist that was originally intended for the den because it expands to be much larger from the current 9 ft x 9 ft to 9 x 13 ft. It was only purchased due to its large size and is not something I would invest in reupholstering, so when ready, I will be looking for something else. The cream leather chair came from Craigslist as well and Wes said it was the perfect size and although I was less convinced, we bought it, and it has literally been in nearly every room in my home. Nevertheless, I still have it and it fits in the room for now. The end tables are actually nightstands, I repurposed the large dresser from one of the bedrooms and when Mom moved in, we added her recliner and a special bookcase my Daddy made her to hold finished her scrapbooks. There is a nice little built-in bookcase that holds movies and tapes. The light fixture is not really a light fixture, just a cheap fan, and needs to be replaced.

After getting the roof fixed, I plan to redo the flooring to rip out all the carpet that was stained from the five or six years that this home was rented out before we bought it, and add hardwood floors that tie in with the rest of the hardwoods. Right now, we have a large shag rug to cover the stained carpet and and an antique Gabbeh Persian rug runner that we got at auction, that is gorgeous and I will repurpose elswhere when this room is renovated.

I want to add a little architectural detailing to hide the seams in the beadboard used for the ceiling. At one time grasscloth covered the walls of the interior hallway and it has been left there and painted over several times. We painted over it to get rid of the pastel blue. Although I would have preferred the original grasscloth, I quite like it and the texture it adds, so I will probably just paint over it again as well.

This room still has much to be done as it looks nothing like what I envision for it and nothing like what I think it is telling me it wants to be. Right now, I think the room is probably mostly saying to repair the leak!

Please check back occasionally to see how this room changes over time into what it wants to be.
